What We Do.......
Services
Complete Eye Care
Our exams are more than just a quick check. They encompass pretests, a comprehensive eye examination using traditional diagnostic machines, but also advanced eye testing using the latest in high tech optical equipment.
We recommend eye exams as early at 3 years of age focusing on eye health and developing healthy life long habits. Early warning signs include unusual clumsiness, squinting at the TV, skipping lines when reading, transposing letters, or resistance to close up tasks. Regular examinations are key in our commitment to help you maintain a lifetime of healthy vision.
Many eye diseases are “silent” or asymptomatic for years. Advanced eye testing allows us to quickly diagnose any signs of eye disease so we can proceed with timely and proper treatment.
We can give advice on mitigating some types of diseases. The eye is the only place where blood vessels can be seen without penetrating the skin. Subtle sub-clinical changes in these vessels can aid in early diagnosis and disease prevention. Early detection increases the likelihood of healthy vision maintenance.
We provide specialty clinics for ocular surface disease (commonly known as dry eye disease) and vision rehabilitation therapy.
Eye Tests and Examinations
- 01
Eye Pre-Test Examination
- Retinal photography to monitor for changes , especially very subtle diabetic “dots and blots”, pigment spots in your eye, or optic nerve head (glaucoma) changes.
- External photography of eye structures especially suspicious lumps and bumps.
- MPOD (macular pigment optical density) -measures susceptibility to diseases like age related macular degeneration (ARMD) or diabetic changes. Macular pigments serve to improve contrast, fine detail vision, and glare-recovery time; thus, reduce light sensitivity and eye strain.
- Color vision testing (ishihara colour plates and D15) – tests discrimination of subtle changes in color differences, or the total lack of ability to differentiate colors. This test is frequently used to monitor for medication toxicity or for industrial/college/police applications.
- 02
Complete Eye Examination
Refraction – checks your eyeglass prescription. For customized prescriptions, a measurement is required from your eye to the target. (e.g. from eye to computer screen.)
Binocular vision tests – determine if your eyes are coordinated and working together, and focusing on the same point.
External exam of the eyes surface – looks for diseases like “dry eye” and lid margin disease, thinning of cornea, or cataracts.
Internal exam of the retina, and optic nerve head – looks for diseases like macular degeneration, diabetes, and glaucoma.
Contact lens assessments – these exams require prior booking to allow for extra time and are a NON-OHIP insured service.
- 03
Advanced Eye Examination
- Visual fields (peripheral and central vision test) – frequently used to diagnose/monitor diseases like glaucoma, neurological problems (strokes or brain tumors), or for Ministry of Transportation licensure.
- Colorimetry (color specific visual fields) – observes how the brain interprets colors differently in the side vision, associated with clumsiness or learning problems in children.
- OCT (optical coherence tomography) – high resolution imagery of eye tissues similar to ultrasound, which can detect glaucoma progression, retinal disease, macular degeneration, diabetic changes, and retinal side effects from medications (like plaquenil).
- Gonioscopy – a special mirrored “contact lens” allows a 360 degree view of the drainage system of the inside of your eye to detect blockages or damage.
- Pachymetry – measures the corneal thickness, the outside lens of the eye, to detect corneal diseases and determine glaucoma susceptibility.

Eye Treatments
- Pharmaceutical prescriptions – for glaucoma, pink eye, allergies, inflammation, etc.
- OSD or dry eye treatments – in office and/or at home. For more information on Dry Eye see OSD Specialty Eye Clinic below.

- General eye health and maintenance recommendations – may include nutraceuticals, dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications.
- Recommendations/referrals can be made to a well established network of health professionals like osteopaths, naturopathic doctors, physiotherapists, or chiropractors. Some specialized services are unavailable in Midland like lipiflow treatments, or ortho K for myopia control using overnight rigid lenses.
- Referral for tertiary surgical care when required, with co-management with the specialist as required.

Ocular Surface Disease (OSD) Clinic
(commonly known as “dry eye”)
If you have been referred by your rheumatologist, please notify us at the time of your booking and provide a detailed medical history and medication list, in advance.
Diagnosis:
- OSDI (ocular surface disease index) – indicates your symptom severity.
- Osmolarity – tests “saltiness” of tears which is the most important indicator of OSD.
- InflammaDry – tear inflammation markers (especially important for autoimmune diseases like sjogren’s syndrome).
- TBUT (tear break up time) – determines how fast tears evaporate.
- Vital stains – identify target areas of irritation.
- Lid margin examination – identify diseases like blepharitis, rosacea, gland distortions, and turned eyelids/lashes.
- Meibomian gland assessment for blockage – the most common cause of OSD
For more information on diagnosis and testing click HERE!
Treatment:
- Home based therapy -simple take home treatments to be done 1-3x/day. For information on home based therapy click HERE!
- In-Office treatments are available for manual gland expression (referrals for lipiflow are available).
- Low Level Light therapy (LLLT) is a safer milder form of IPL (intense pulsed laser) used by cosmetic surgeons. In rosacea patients, the cheek area is treated, not the eyelid area.

Rehabilitation Clinic
If you have been referred to our rehab clinic, please notify us at the time of booking, and provide a detailed history list, CT/MRI reports, and medication list before your appointment.
- HTS (home therapy system) – exercises from the comfort of your home to “strengthen your eye muscles”, with the aim of increasing coordination and comfortable vision at all distances and positions of gaze.
- Amblyopia (lazy eye) therapy – syntonics, occlusion therapy, and/or online binocular vision training will be recommended in a treatment plan individualized for you.
- Questionnaires – PCSS (post concussion symptom scale), BIVSS (brain injury vision symptom survey).
If you have a concussion or brain injury which is affecting your eyesight take the #02 Concussion/BIVSS Intake Package survey by clicking HERE! We will review your results and contact you for an appointment. - Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapies* Using cutting-edge research, we are implementing therapies focused on rehabilitation of the eyes, including post-concussion vision syndrome. If you have been referred for concussion, or traumatic brain injury, we will customize a specialized treatment plan to assist in your healing process, in coordination with your health care team. We understand that each injury and person is different, and requires personalized care. We are happy to create, adapt, and expand on several therapeutic modalities.
1) Syntonics – although syntonics has existed since early 1900’s, new scientific evidence is promoting its renewal. An effective yet simple therapy that has helped patients, from those with concussions, to children with learning difficulties. For more information click HERE!
2) Brain Tap – uses auricular and visible PBM, guided imagery, and binaural beats to entrain the brainwaves and “restore your brain’s natural balance so you feel relaxed, rebooted, and revitalized”. In-office trials are available. For more information click HERE!3) Red & Near infrared therapy – used for years by physiotherapists for musculoskeletal injuries, this technology is starting to be utilized for ocular applications from ocular rosacea and cosmetic enhancements, to post concussion vision syndrome.
