Life Experience

I graduated from the School of Optometry, University of Waterloo in 1987 after a BSc from the University of Alberta in 1983.

During optometry school, I did research on binocular vision, and then went on to become one of the first in Canada to hold a post graduate optometric residency degree.  My Family Practice residency degree from the University of Alabama was completed in 1990.  Working with ophthalmologists at The Omega Center and the Birmingham VA Center, I gained extensive experience in ocular disease working with a poor undernourished population.  This experience sparked my interest in preventive optometry back in 1990.  Now, years later, present research is proving this philosophy to be true.

For over 30 years, I have practiced traditional optometry with a high level of expertise in retinal disease, and contact lenses including RGP gas permeable lenses for keratoconus.

One MD described me as a “holistic optometrist”, coining a new term 20 years ago. Thriving on learning, I continually expand my knowledge base in multiple areas each year. The science of eyecare has exploded since my graduation over 30 years ago, and it has been stimulating to keep pace with new technologies, diagnostic techniques, and instrumentation leading the way in optimal eye health. My passion has expanded into research and practical applications in the following areas:

  1.   The eye and nutrition as it relates to general health
  2.   The eye and its link to brain health as an emerging science
  3.   Photobiomodulation: the study of how frequencies of light affect biologic functions
  4.   Ocular Surface Disease: “dry eye disease”
  5.   Myopia control

I have also been asked to participate in clinical studies on age-related macular degeneration and MPOD, as well as drug toxicities and MPOD. Additionally, we hope to expand on the first study focusing on children’s sight soon.

I have reaped the benefits of regular exercise, yoga, meditation, as well as a healthy diet, and nutritional cooking & baking non-gluten treats, in my spare time. So don’t be surprised if I offer a recipe or two!
